As part of its commitment to medical education and enhancing the capacity of healthcare workers inside Syria, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), in cooperation with the Directorate of Health in Deir Ezzor, has launched a series of specialized training courses.
According to a reporter from DeirEzzor24 Network, the training programs include emergency care, administrative competence, and public health prevention. These courses cover CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), hospital management, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Life Support (ALS). The aim is to improve the quality of medical care services across Syrian provinces, with a specific focus on Deir Ezzor.
In an interview with DeirEzzor24, Dr. Samer Al-Salim, the training program coordinator and certified SAMS instructor, explained that each training course lasts for three days and includes both theoretical and practical components. The theoretical part provides essential scientific concepts, while the practical sessions take place in a simulated environment to enhance hands-on skills. Each training center accommodates up to 25 participants, and the courses are currently being conducted at three locations in Deir Ezzor: the National Hospital, Al-Huwaidi Hospital, and the Red Crescent Hall.
Dr. Al-Salim noted that this initiative was launched based on a thorough assessment of the region’s health needs. SAMS identified a significant gap in the quality of medical care that requires urgent and sustainable intervention to enhance staff competency and improve patient services.
These training workshops are part of SAMS’ long-term strategic vision for developing continuous medical education in Syria. In 2022, SAMS established the “SAMS Institute for Medical Education” to improve the quality of training programs in northern Syria and support healthcare professionals, especially in light of challenges posed by years of conflict, which have resulted in a severe shortage of qualified personnel and educational resources.
SAMS’ efforts also extend to supporting undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in various fields such as intensive care, oncology, orthopedic surgery, and neurology, through local training centers and remote supervision by international specialists, particularly from the United States. The ongoing training programs also focus on enhancing epidemic response mechanisms, updating treatment methods, and advancing critical care and infection control specialties.
These training initiatives represent a significant step toward rehabilitating the healthcare sector in Deir Ezzor and reflect a shared responsibility between civil society organizations and official health institutions.
