With temperatures reaching record highs in the city of Deir Ezzor, residents have been flocking to the banks of the Euphrates River to escape the intense heat waves that have gripped the region since the beginning of summer.

This growing trend of using the river as a recreational spot and a means to cool down has led to a noticeable rise in drowning incidents, particularly among children and young people who lack adequate swimming skills or venture into unsafe areas of the river.

Al-Baraa Al-Hamad, an official with the Civil Defense team in Deir Ezzor, told DeirEzzor24 that the team has mobilized its crews since the start of the extreme heat and increased the readiness of its personnel to be prepared to respond to any emergency.

He confirmed that the Civil Defense teams continuously monitor incoming reports and have intensified their patrols around the river to reduce the occurrence of further incidents.

Al-Hamad concluded his statement by addressing the people of Deir Ezzor, urging them not to allow children to go swimming in the river alone.

He emphasized the importance of adult supervision to ensure their safety, noting that most of the recorded drowning cases involved children who were not accompanied by their guardians while swimming.
