أبو اسكندر أحد عناصر جيش الدفاع الوطني في حي الجورة بدير الزور، ألقت القبض عليه سابقاً الهيئة الشرعية في دير الزور التابعة لجبهة النصرة وفصائل أخرى مقاتلة لتطلق سراحه بعدها.
فور دخول داعش لمدينة دير الزور أعلن البيعة لهم وانضمّ لصفوف المقاتلين. لم تمض فترة طويلة ليُشاهد أبو اسكندر مع الشرطة الإسلامية في القائم على الحدود العراقية بعد أن غير لقبه إلى أبو شيماء.
حين تكون قيادات رفيعة في التنظيم من صف الظباط السابقين في المخابرات العراقية، فمن غير المستغرب أن يصبح أبو اسكندر عنصر جيش الدفاع الوطني التابع لجيش النظام عنصراً في شرطة الخلافة.
